Step-by-Step Process
1️⃣ Before Restoration (Left Image)
- The pin is shown in its original, unrestored state.
- The gilded figure and surrounding wreath are dulled and slightly tarnished.
- The translucent plique-à-jour enamel has areas of discoloration and loss, and there is surface grime obscuring details.
- Structural integrity is compromised; joints are fragile.
2️⃣ Disassembly and Component Cleaning (Middle Image)
- The piece was carefully disassembled into its three main elements:
- The back plique-à-jour enamel plate.
- The sculpted central figure.
- The decorative gold wreath frame.
- Each element was gently cleaned using appropriate solvents and micro tools to remove old dirt and oxidized residues.
- The enamel plate was stabilized; cracks and small losses were assessed for potential local infill or stabilization.
- The gold figure and frame were cleaned and brightened while preserving patina.
3️⃣ Conservation and Stabilization
- The enamel was locally reinforced where needed using reversible conservation-grade adhesives.
- Fine repairs were made to the enamel edges to prevent further chipping.
- Structural elements (pin hinge and catch) were checked and adjusted to restore secure function.
4️⃣ Reassembly and Final Finishing
- All components were carefully realigned and reassembled to maintain original design proportions and depth.
- The gold surfaces were gently polished to revive luster without removing historical surface character.
- Final protective coatings were applied where appropriate to enhance longevity and prevent future tarnishing.
5️⃣ After Restoration (Right Image)
- The completed pin is fully reassembled and structurally sound.
- The plique-à-jour enamel regains its vibrant translucency and light play.
- The gilded figure and wreath frame exhibit renewed brilliance, highlighting fine sculptural details.
- Overall appearance respects the artist’s original intention while ensuring long-term preservation.
